Please give to the fireworks on Friday night
As many of you know, Hamden always does a fantastic fireworks display. As long as it doesn't rain on Friday, we will see them at 9:20 p.m. at Town Center Park. If it's raining, the U.S. Army Field band concert, scheduled for 7:15 p.m. Friday at the park formerly known as Meadowbrook Golf Course, will be in the Hamden High auditorium, and the fireworks will be Saturday night.
Here's the rub: The Hamden Volunteer Fire Fighters sponsor the fireworks and do the fundraising thereof. However, Chairman Karl Olson is reporting that donations are down for the $25,000 event and more than $7,000 still needs to be raised. They will be passing the hat at the fireworks. Please do your best to help. I know I will be.

Preliminary results at Miss Connecticut Pageant
I'm on vacation at the Miss Connecticut Scholarship Pageant in New London and I wanted to let you know that two young ladies from Hamden did very well at preliminary competitions tonight.
Morgan Amarone, 23, tied for lifestyle and fitness in swimsuit with Acacia Courtney, 18. Some of you may remember that Acacia was Connecticut's Outstanding Teen two years ago.
We had a preliminary competition Thursday night too. In the Miss division, Alexandria Puglisi of Cheshire won the talent award. I mention her just because she lives up the road from Hamden.
One of our teens who happens to be from Wolcott but who holds the title of Greater Hamden's Outstanding Teen, won the talent award. Brianna Leigh Smail sang "The Wizard and I" from the great musical about the witches of Oz, "Wicked."
Things are pretty darn exciting up here at the Garde Arts Center. We've had excellent preliminary competitions. I invite all of you to join us Saturday at 7 p.m. at the Garde for finals night. Tickets can be purchased at the door.
