HAMDEN -- Friday afternoon's rain did a number in homes around town and in sections of the new Police Department.
The first floor and adjoining sallyport got water of up to several inches. It was cleaned up by the Fire and Public Works departments.
"It was pretty bad. The whole back yard was flooded, the asphalt pushed up," Sgt. John Testa said.
Fire Chief David Berardesca said the water got into the sallyport and some of it got into the detention area because of the "inordinate amount of rain" that poured.
"We had a lot of flooded intersections but the water receded fairly quickly. We pumped out some basements and we were otherwise unscathed," Beradesca said.
"Some times Mother Nature beats you. This was a massive rain storm," Mayor Scott D. Jackson said. "When every single neighborhood is calling I know we have a significant thing that all the engineering in the world and all the construction in the world isn’t going to help. Some days you have to bail things out and today was one of those days."
The reasons why water got into the new building will need to be determined, he said.
