NORTH HAVEN – Town firefighters are raising money today for the Atlantic Regional Fire Fighters Burn Foundation.

The event will take place from 5 to 10 p.m. Thursday (4/19) at Buffalo Wild Wings, 350 Universal Drive North.

Buffalo Wild Wings will donate 10 percent of all pre-taxed food sales toward the foundation, according to North Haven fire Lt. Paul Januszewski of Local 2987 of the International Association of Firefighters.

There will be happy hour specials from 4 to 7 p.m.. Fire trucks will be on the scene for children to view.

There also will be a “Blazin' Challenge” for firefighters and police officers, with a maximum of one participant per department. There is a $50 entry fee that includes wings and one draft beer. HAMDEN -- Mayor Scott D. Jackson has proclaimed the week of April 15 to April 22 2012 as Days of Remembrance of the Victims of the Holocaust.  The Town will host a Holocaust Remembrance Day observance at noon Friday in Thornton Wilder Hall, Miller Library Complex.  The ceremony is open to all members of the public and will include a responsive reading and the lighting of seven candles.  This year’s theme is Choosing to Act:  Stories of Rescue, and commemorates the actions of rescuers during the Holocaust.  The stories of ordinary people who chose to intervene and help rescue Jews despite the risks, remind us that individuals have the power to make a difference. 

Our keynote speaker this year will be Renee Glassner of Hamden, a survivor of the Holocaust, who was born in Losice, Poland.  Along with members of her family, Mrs. Glassner  was one of only 16 of the 6,000 Jewish Losice natives who survived the Rabbi Menachem Piekarski of Chabad of Hamden will provide the invocation.  Dr. Barry Herman of the Ethnic Heritage Center will be the Master of Ceremonies.  Mayor Scott Jackson will provide remarks and a proclamation.  Rabbi Benjamin Scolnic of Temple Beth Sholom will lead the audience in a responsive prayer.  Students from Hamden’s Public and Parochial Schools will participate in a candle lighting ceremony, and Hamden High School students will perform a reading.  Audience members will be invited to make brief comments.  A light lunch will be served following the ceremony.   

This year’s observance is the Town’s tenth Holocaust Remembrance Day.  The United States Congress established the Days of Remembrance as our nation’s annual civic commemoration of the victims of the Holocaust, and as a time for reminding Americans of what can happen to civilized people when bigotry, hatred and indifference reign.

NORTH HAVEN – Flair for Hair will sponsor its annual “Night for Nurses” from 6 to 9 p.m. Friday at 310 Washington Ave.

The event is owner Joyce-Lyn Altieri's way of honoring nursings, whom she feels are the “compassionate and understanding backbones” of the hospital.

Jackson has proclaimed the week of May 1^st through May 8th 2011 as Days of Remembrance of the Victims of the Holocaust.  The Town will host a Holocaust Remembrance Day observance on Friday, May 6th at noon in Thornton Wilder Hall, Miller Library Complex.  The ceremony is open to all members of the public.  This year’s theme is Justice and Accountability in the Face of Genocide.   2011 marks the 65^th anniversary of the verdicts at the first Nuremberg trial and the 50^th anniversary of the trial of Adolf Eichmann.  A light lunch will be served following the ceremony.  

Keynote speaker is Jim Messina, a teacher of religion and history at St. Martin DePorres Academy in New Haven, one of 25 teachers from across the United States selected for a three-week intensive seminar sponsored by the American Gathering of Jewish Holocaust Survivors.  The seminar began in Washington DC at the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum and the group then traveled to Yad VaShem, Israel; Berlin, Germany; Warsaw and Krakow, Poland visiting exhibits and museums  dedicated to the Holocaust, as well as several of the camps and other historic sites.                                   

 A short video entitled “Justice and Accountability in the Face of Genocide: What Have we Learned?” will be shown, followed by a flute solo by Meri Fleischman.  Chaya Blitzer will tell her story titled “Finding Dina:  A Holocaust Miracle” and Hamden High School Student Alexandra Shuttleworth will present her original song.  Rabbi Alison Adler will introduce 7^th grade students from Congregation Mishkan Israel, who will present essays.  A candle lighting ceremony will be accompanied by a responsive prayer led by Rabbi Herbert Brockman of Congregation Mishkan Israel.  Audience members will be invited to make brief comments. 

    This year’s observance is the Town’s ninth Holocaust Remembrance Day.
