Before I mention the activities in our towns that are coming up, I'd like to tell you what I'm working on. The Hamden Board of Ed the other night gave out raises to the two assistant superintendents. And, Hamden Mayor Scott D. Jackson said that the town is getting close to solidifying a contract for the takeover of the transfer station.
Also coming up in the New Haven Register are profiles of the candidates running for state representative and senator.

There will be a lot to do, from hayrides, to a climbing wall, to pony rides from 1 to 3. There's also a hay maze, face painting and you can bring old clothes for scarecrow making. There'll be mustic in the Big Red Barn all day. Exhibitors include the Hamden High Reptile Club, New Haven Mineral Club and Lops R Us. Sounds like a great time. Columbus Day Parade coming Sunday!!!

More than 2,500 marchers are expected in Hamden on Sunday when the Greater New Haven Columbus Day parade steps off from Hamden High School, 2040 Dixwell Ave., at 1 p.m. The five living Italian-American mayors have been chosen as grand marshals. They are John L. Carusone, Lucien DiMeo, Peter F. Villano, Barbara DeNicola and Carl Amento.
As you may know, the parade was held in New Haven for many years and since 2003, it's been rotating to the metro area towns. This year is Hamden's turn. Next year, it's West Haven. Last year was East Haven.
In any case, a great group of folks are working on the parade, and the general chairmen in Hamden are Art Giulietti, Laura Luzzi and Peter Gambaradella. The logistics guy-parade coordinator is Tom Conway. All are working under the Greater New Haven Columbus Day Committee, which also is having a big dinner Friday night at Anthony's Ocean View in New Haven and a wreath ceremony Saturday at 11 a.m. in Wooster Square in New Haven.
The parade runs for a mile and a quarter and ends in the Miller Library parking lot, 2901 Dixwell Ave. The reviewing stand is opposite the Hamden Government Center at the corner of Dixwell and Evergreen avenues.
There are five divisions in the parade with all kinds of marching bands and representation from many clubs and organizations. Parade committee member Bill Zampa of East Haven tells me it's a great family activity. They're having those Shriner mini-cars and Santa Claus!

Tire Pond meeting Rescheduled in North Haven

A public meeting on the latest developments at the tire pond on State Street will take place at 7:15 p.m. Oct. 12 in the North Haven Library community room, 17 Elm St.
The meeting has been rescheduled from Oct. 6.
State Sen. Leonard A. Fasano, R-North Haven, and state Rep. Steve Fontana, D-North Haven, requested the meeting with the state Department of Environmental Protection.
The DEP plans to address concerns regarding how the material is to be moved to the site, the nature of the material, the testing of material, and the standards used to determine suitability of the materials, Fasano said.
The DEP recently presented an update of its tire pond closure plan to the Inland Wetlands Commission. Residents and commissioners are concerned about the soils from Hamden’s Newhall neighborhood that are being trucked there to cover the tire pond. The DEP has said that the soils are of commercial quality and good enough to be there. The top 2 feet of the tire pond, which is now covered, will contain soils of residential grade, according to the DEP.
